Recent Studies

A Recently published study in the Spine Journal shows:

Adding Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy to Standard Medical Care for Patients With Acute Low Back Pain offers a significant advantage for decreasing pain and improving physical functioning when compared with only standard care, for men and women between 18 and 35 years of age with acute LBP.

The Spine Journal, the official journal of the North American Spine Society, is an international and multidisciplinary journal that publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on research and treatment related to the spine and spine care, including basic science and clinical investigations.

Even Harvard Medical School Says It's Time to Work Together

The Harvard Medical School special health report, "Low Back Pain - Healing Your Aching Back," outlines factors leading or contributing to LBP and suggests therapeutic options for patients who live with it. Chiropractic is listed as a viable therapeutic option for patients suffering from acute LBP, noting that chiropractic relieves pain and reduces the necessity of medication for some of these patients.

The report quotes "a 2010 review of 12 different studies involving 2,887 people with low back pain," which concluded that "chiropractic care improved short- and medium-term pain more than other treatments, including exercise, physical therapy, and medication ...People who saw chiropractors also reported being less disabled over the short term (one month) compared with people who received other treatments such as standard medical therapy."

Doctors of Chiropractic – What is Their Role?
Chiropractic is the second largest healing profession in the world.  It’s based on the concept that proper structure and function of vertebral segments and associated nerve centers is critical for good health.  Treatment usually involves correction of the malfunctioning segments of the skeletal system, primarily in the spine and pelvic areas.

The Profession:  Recognized Worldwide
Chiropractic is officially recognized, acknowledged or regulated in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, nine provinces of Canada, Switzerland, Germany, New Zealand, Bolivia, France, Italy, the United Kingdome, South Africa, Japan and other countries worldwide.  Currently, there are approximately 24,000 doctors of chiropractic, serving millions of patients.

Your Chiropractor is a Doctor
Board qualified and licensed chiropractors are entitled by law to the title “Doctor of Chiropractic” (D.C.).  To become state licensed, your doctor completed a minimum of six years of college study and clinic internship at an institution accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  He or she then passed a state board examination, including written and practical tests on basic science and clinical subjects.  The California Board of Chiropractic Examiners also requires practitioners to complete annual postgraduate study for license renewal.

Trained and Educated to Serve You
Your doctor has received extensive training to diagnose and to treat health related problems.  While attending more than 4,400 hours of classes and accredited chiropractic college, he or she completed an average of 1,840 hours of science requirements in anatomy, physiology, inorganic and organic chemistry, pathology, hygiene and public health.  The curriculum also included an average of 2,080 hours of clinical science, such as physical, clinical, laboratory and differential diagnosis; roentgenology, technique and interpretation; geriatrics; dermatology; syphilology; and principles of chiropractic.  In addition, your doctor, as a student, completed 550 hours of internship in a clinic environment and courses in law, ethics and economics.

Your Doctor’s Right to Diagnose
Your doctor has earned the right, through his education, and has the responsibility to diagnose your particular ailment before beginning treatment.  Procedures may include referral to lab or radiology facilities to give your doctor the information needed for proper diagnosis.

The Tools of the Trade
Doctors of chiropractic use many of the same diagnostic tools as other doctors, such as X-ray and physical, laboratory and instrument tests.  Prior to treatment, your doctor will conduct a comprehensive examination to determine whether your condition will respond to chiropractic care.  If other forms of treatment are indicated, he’ll refer your case to the proper specialist.

Your Treatment
Doctors of chiropractic adhere to the philosophy that the body is capable of maintaining and restoring health with a balanced diet, rest and properly functioning nervous system.  Those essential elements can be introduced without drugs or surgery.  Manipulation of the spine and other areas is the key factor in recovery.  Such a procedure is usually performed by hand.  While patients are positioned on a specially designed table, the doctor applies pressure to restore normal mobility to the malfunctioning areas.  Treatment can also include appropriate nutritional advice or supplementation .

Is the Procedure Painful?
Although each patient reacts differently, the procedure is rarely painful.  It can, however, cause a variety of temporary reactions ranging from occasional soreness in the spinal joints or muscles to a sense of exhilaration and relief.

How Expensive is Chiropractic Treatment?
According to figures compiled by the Workers’ Compensation Board of the State of Oregon, such treatment is one-third the cost of medical care for specific back injuries.  Treatment for other disorders is also less.
